The Idea Behind the Laps of Luxury
“The Laps of Luxury dog bed idea came to me in a flash when I asked myself ‘where do dogs always want to sleep?’ For my dogs, the answer was a resounding ‘in my lap!’ Even Ferdinand the Great Dane tries to nap in my lap. So I pieced the first one together right then and made six more in the following week and started showing them around Boulder. People loved the concept but I felt like that wasn't enough. I wanted these dog and cat beds to be about something bigger than just making and selling a cute product. (Granted, it’s a really clever, handmade, unique, fun, artsy-craftsy, cute product, but still, you know what I’m saying.)
So I asked the universe to ‘show me the Meaning!’ A few hours later (prompt universe!) a gentleman I’d never met before took one look at my new custom dog beds and declared, “Those are like mandalas.” He explained that a mandala is a sacred visual meditation tool used in Buddhist and Native American traditions. The artist painstakingly creates the mandala with grains of colored sand while contemplating spiritual ideas such as harmony and fulfillment. When finished, the mandala is swept away, spreading the positive thoughts that went into its creation out into the universe.
*Voila!* I knew how to give my luxury pet beds Meaning. I took apart all the Laps of Luxury I had made and started over. This time, love and blessings for the animals were put into each and every stitch, every applique, every piece of trim and adornment. When a dog bed is finished, it is infused with these thoughts and will radiate love and comfort and a peaceful nap to every little dog, cat or pampered pet who snuggles up on it.” ~ Xan Rubey
